Take home coding challenge examples: what real listings show
We looked through 236 remote listings for a coding test. Three mention one. Only one tells you what the task is.
People search for take home coding challenge examples, hoping to see what employers really ask. We wanted to know how many listings show one. So on 3 November 2026 we searched the text of 236 remote job listings: 174 from Himalayas, 50 from Jobicy and 12 from Remotive. They were a mix of the newest listings and listings found by searching a few topics, so treat this as a snapshot, not a count of the whole internet.
What we found
| What the listing text says | Listings |
|---|---|
| Names a take home task as a hiring step | 2 (Fluence, Monzo) |
| Names a live coding assessment | 1 (Databricks) |
| Describes what the task actually is | 1 (Fluence) |
A looser search for words like “assessment”, “case study” and “skills test” found three more listings. None was a coding test: one was a case study meeting for a trainer role, one mentioned skills assessments for an office assistant, and one mentioned technical assessments as a duty of the job itself.
So a real example of a take home coding test is rare. Most listings do not mention one at all, and almost none describe it.
The one detailed example: Fluence
The Fluence listing is open about its test. It makes the take home the first step, and asks you to build a small tool-lending app called “LendLoop” with Next.js, Clerk, Convex, n8n and TypeScript. It lists what must work, what you hand in, and what they judge. It says you may use AI tools. For the whole breakdown, and the questions to ask before you start, see take home assignment: what to ask before you start.
The two that only name the step
- Monzo, Senior Staff Backend Engineer. The listing’s interview process includes an initial call, a system design interview, a “take home task or pair coding exercise”, and a final interview with a behavioural and a leadership part. It says the process should take around three to four weeks. It does not describe the task.
- Databricks, Solutions Architect - Retail. The listing gives the interview process as: recruiter screen, hiring manager screen, design and architecture interview, live coding assessment, a build-demo-pitch presentation, and a reference check. A live assessment is done with someone watching, not at home. It does not describe the task either.
What this means for you
- Do not expect the listing to tell you. In our snapshot, the coding test is usually something you learn about after you apply.
- Ask early. Ask what form the test takes, how long it should take, and whether it is paid. See our eight questions.
- Be careful with “examples” from elsewhere. A real example comes from a company that published it. If a page offers “real take home tests from named companies” without saying where each one came from, you cannot tell if it is real.
Our read
We titled this post with the phrase people search for, but we will not make up examples to fill it. Only one listing in our 236 gave enough detail to learn from. We will add examples here when employers publish their own and we can link to them.
Listings on Jobicy and Himalayas are linked to their own pages, as those boards ask. Remotive listings link back to Remotive.
